Quick facts

Award level
M.V.Sc. is a postgraduate degree in veterinary and animal sciences, normally pursued after a B.V.Sc. / B.V.Sc. & A.H. qualification.
Typical duration
Two years (four semesters) in the examples published by TANUVAS and ICAR-IVRI.
Entry qualification
A B.V.Sc. / B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree from a Veterinary Council of India-recognised college is required for the TANUVAS M.V.Sc. admission route; exact eligibility conditions can vary by institution and admission notice.
Academic format
At ICAR-IVRI, the four-semester master's structure is described as two semesters of coursework followed by two semesters for research.
Examples of specialisations
Published M.V.Sc. specialisations include veterinary medicine, surgery and radiology, pathology, pharmacology and toxicology, microbiology, parasitology, animal nutrition, genetics and breeding, livestock production management, public health, and reproduction/gynaecology/obstetrics.

Eligibility

The normal feeder qualification is B.V.Sc. or B.V.Sc. & A.H. For example, TANUVAS states that applicants to its M.V.Sc. programmes must hold its B.V.Sc. / B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree or an equivalent degree from another university, completed at a college recognised by the Veterinary Council of India. Applicants should treat the current prospectus of each university as controlling, because institutions may set their own equivalence, category, domicile, grade, and document requirements.

  • For the TANUVAS route, the qualifying veterinary degree must be from a VCI-recognised college.
  • Choose a discipline that is offered by the target university; availability varies by campus and annual intake.

Duration and study pattern

M.V.Sc. is generally a two-year postgraduate programme. TANUVAS labels its M.V.Sc. degree programmes as two-year courses, while ICAR-IVRI describes a four-semester master's programme: two semesters of coursework and two semesters of research. This makes the degree both taught and research-based rather than only a classroom specialisation.

  • Typical published structure: 4 semesters over 2 years.
  • At ICAR-IVRI: 2 semesters coursework plus 2 semesters research.

Specialisations and curriculum

The exact curriculum is specialisation-specific and university-specific. Official programme lists demonstrate the breadth of the degree: TANUVAS lists 22 M.V.Sc. disciplines, including animal genetics and breeding, animal nutrition, livestock production management, poultry science, veterinary anatomy, biochemistry, biotechnology, extension education, gynaecology and obstetrics, medicine, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology and toxicology, public health, surgery and radiology, wildlife science, and biostatistics. ICAR-IVRI likewise lists clinical, laboratory, public-health, production, nutrition, and biotechnology-related M.V.Sc. disciplines.

  • Clinical examples: veterinary medicine; veterinary surgery and radiology; animal reproduction, gynaecology and obstetrics.
  • Diagnostic and laboratory examples: pathology; microbiology; parasitology; pharmacology and toxicology; biochemistry.
  • Animal-production examples: nutrition; genetics and breeding; livestock production and management; poultry science; livestock products technology.
  • Students should compare the current department syllabus, research facilities, faculty supervision, and seat matrix for the intended specialisation.

Admission routes

Admission is not administered through one identical route at every veterinary university. ICAR-IVRI states that its M.V.Sc. admissions are based on the ICAR All India Entrance Examination (PG), conducted through the National Testing Agency, followed by merit and online counselling. ICAR has also published a 2026–27 page for PG and Ph.D. admissions, indicating that applicants should use the live annual notice rather than a prior-year timetable.

  • ICAR-IVRI: All India Entrance Examination (PG), then merit-based online counselling.
  • TANUVAS: its published process allocates 75% of annual admission strength through its common PG entrance examination for Tamil Nadu candidates and 25% through ICAR; counselling is rank-based.
  • Entrance dates, seat matrices, reservations, eligible disciplines, and application procedures are annual and must be checked in the current notice.

Costs

Fees vary substantially by institution, category, hostel use, and year. As a dated public-institution example, ICAR-IVRI's fee page for academic session 2026–27 lists first-year charges of ₹43,500 for General/OBC M.V.Sc. students before the listed hostel, water, and electricity charge; the page lists a first-year grand total of ₹55,500 where that ₹12,000 hostel-related charge applies. For SC/ST students, the same page lists ₹18,800 before that charge and a ₹30,800 first-year grand total with it. These are an institutional example, not an India-wide fee benchmark.

  • Check whether accommodation, mess, refundable caution money, examination, thesis evaluation, and one-time admission charges are included.
  • Use the fee notice applicable to the admission year and category before making financial plans.

Next options

A principal academic progression after M.V.Sc. is a Ph.D. in Veterinary and Animal Sciences. TANUVAS offers a three-year Ph.D. in this area and states that, for most veterinary specialisations, applicants need B.V.Sc. & A.H. plus a master's degree in the relevant field; it publishes discipline-specific exceptions and requirements for some subjects. The research and thesis component of M.V.Sc. can therefore provide a direct foundation for doctoral applications in the same or a closely aligned speciality.

  • Ph.D. admission usually requires an M.V.Sc. in the relevant specialisation plus the university's prescribed academic threshold.
  • Confirm discipline match carefully: universities may publish distinct requirements for fields such as veterinary biotechnology, livestock products technology, biochemistry, and veterinary medicine.
