For its regular M.Tech route, IIT Bombay identifies GATE as the entrance test. Its Mechanical Engineering department also states that sponsored applicants may qualify with a valid GATE score or two years of relevant experience after the qualifying B.E./B.Tech degree, subject to that category’s requirements. Applicants should therefore verify the current brochure for the target department, specialisation, category, accepted GATE paper, marks threshold, and work-experience rules before applying.

Mechanical Engineering M.Tech curricula are specialised and research/project oriented. IIT Bombay describes advanced compulsory courses, electives, and an individual M.Tech project lasting fourteen months in the final phase; it identifies the project as typically research-and-development oriented. Its department offers Thermal & Fluids Engineering, Design Engineering, and Manufacturing Engineering specialisations.

For example, IIT Bombay’s published Thermal & Fluids Engineering structure includes Fluid Dynamics, Advanced Thermodynamics & Combustion, Advanced Heat Transfer, Computational Methods in Thermal & Fluids Engineering, Mathematical Methods in Engineering, laboratory work, electives, and the M.Tech project. Course titles, credits, laboratories, and thesis requirements should be checked in the current curriculum of the admitting institute.

Admission process

For the 2026–27 cycle, IIT Bombay states that GATE is its M.Tech entrance test and that applicants for Teaching Assistantship and Research Assistantship categories must register on the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP); offers for those categories are made through COAP. Its Mechanical Engineering department states that M.Tech students are admitted once a year in July.

Selection mechanics depend on the category. IIT Bombay Mechanical Engineering lists Teaching Assistantship selection as 70% GATE score and 30% interview performance, while sponsored candidates are selected through an interview. NIT Warangal’s 2026 self-financed Mechanical Engineering process separately scheduled offline written tests and interviews. Application windows, cut-offs, seat counts, interview rules, and fees change by institute and admission year, so applicants should rely on the current official notice rather than past cut-off or deadline information.
