Qualification

A relevant bachelor’s degree is the usual academic base for an M.Sc., but there is no single all-India subject or marks rule for every university. For IIT JAM, candidates who have completed an undergraduate degree or are appearing in the final examination of their qualifying degree may take the examination; however, the undergraduate programme must be completed before admission and the admitting institute makes the final MEQ determination.

Programme requirements can be narrower than the degree title suggests. As an example, IISc’s M.Sc. Chemical Sciences specifies first class in B.Sc. or equivalent, Chemistry as a main subject, and Mathematics at Class 12/PUC level.

The framework also recognises a one-year master’s route after a four-year bachelor’s degree with honours/research, so applicants should verify the duration attached to their specific university and entry pathway.

IISc’s M.Sc. Life Sciences and Chemical Sciences are examples of two-year master’s programmes.

IISc describes a model that includes foundational and flexible coursework, hands-on laboratory training in advanced techniques, personalised coursework/research projects, and an independent thesis research project. Admission routes and 2026 cycle context

Admissions are institution-specific. CUET-PG is another important examination route for participating universities. For example, the University of Delhi’s 2026–27 two-year PG process required candidates to have appeared in the relevant CUET-PG 2026 paper and used CUET-PG scores through its Common Seat Allocation System, subject to programme-specific eligibility.

Dated context: for JAM 2026, the additional/final seat-allocation round was scheduled for July 6–7, 2026, after which the admission process was to close. Candidates targeting a future intake should not rely on this completed cycle; they should monitor the next official JAM/CUET-PG and university admission notices.

UGC’s Ph.D. Regulations, 2022 set national minimum standards for doctoral-degree procedures, while individual universities publish their own admission rules, entrance tests, interviews, seat availability, and discipline requirements.

For science research and academic-track opportunities, the Joint CSIR-UGC NET is relevant in Chemical Sciences, Earth/Atmospheric/Ocean and Planetary Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physical Sciences. The June 2026 notice describes result categories connected with Junior Research Fellowship and assistant-professor eligibility, assistant-professor eligibility and Ph.D. admission, and Ph.D. admission only.

Other outcomes can include laboratory, analytical, quality, scientific-support, data, and research-assistant roles, but job titles and required technical skills depend heavily on the M.Sc. specialisation, practical training, local employer requirements, and experience. Salary and placement outcomes are therefore not stated as universal claims.
