Quick facts
- What it is
- A full-time postgraduate M.Sc. in Economics offered at select IITs. In the JAM 2026 admission matrix, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur and IIT Roorkee list this programme under the Economics (EN) paper.
- Typical duration
- Two years (four semesters/24 months), as explicitly stated by IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi and IIT Roorkee for their M.Sc. Economics programmes.
- 2026–27 listed intake
- For the 2026–27 JAM cycle, the EN-paper seat matrix lists 15 seats at IIT Delhi, 24 at IIT Kanpur and 13 at IIT Roorkee, including indicated PwD-reserved seats. IIT Kanpur and IIT Roorkee also list additional M.Sc. Economics seats under the Mathematical Statistics (MS) paper, so accepted JAM papers are institute-specific.
- Admissions basis
- Admission is centralized through the JAM admission portal for candidates on the JAM merit list, subject to each admitting institute's eligibility requirements and minimum educational qualifications; allocation is based on JAM All India Rank and programme preferences unless an institute explicitly specifies otherwise.
Eligibility depends on the IIT and JAM paper
A completed undergraduate degree, or final-year undergraduate status, makes a candidate eligible to sit the JAM examination. Admission to a particular M.Sc. Economics programme is separate: the candidate must also meet that institute's minimum educational qualification (MEQ), which is verified by the admitting IIT.
For the 2026–27 cycle, IIT Delhi accepted specified three-year-or-longer bachelor's qualifications including B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.Stat., B.Math., B.Tech. and B.E. (or equivalent). IIT Kanpur required a bachelor's degree following at least three years of education after 10+2. IIT Roorkee required Economics, Statistics, BCA, or a B.Sc./B.A./B.Com. with Mathematics, while placing no subject restriction on engineering degrees. These are programme-specific rules and can change in a future JAM brochure.
Applicants should not infer that qualifying JAM alone guarantees a seat: the JAM authority states that both the relevant eligibility requirements and MEQs must be satisfied, and final verification is conducted by the admitting institute.
- Check the applicable year's JAM brochure for the programme code, accepted paper(s), MEQ and seat matrix.
- For 2026–27, EN was the principal Economics-paper route; IIT Kanpur and IIT Roorkee also showed M.Sc. Economics options under MS.
- Final-year candidates should confirm the qualifying-degree completion and document deadlines in the applicable admission cycle.
Duration and study format
This is normally a two-year, full-time master's degree. IIT Delhi describes its M.Sc. as four semesters (24 months); IIT Roorkee describes admission to a two-year M.Sc. Economics programme; and IIT Kanpur describes its programme as a two-year M.Sc. launched in 2023–24.
The degree title is shared, but detailed academic regulations, credit requirements, electives and assessment are set by the individual IIT rather than by JAM.
Curriculum: economics theory with quantitative and computational training
The exact curriculum varies by institute. IIT Kanpur's published M.Sc. Economics structure comprises 20 courses and approximately 180 credits: 11 compulsory courses and 9 electives. Its compulsory coverage includes microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematical methods, applied probability and statistics, econometrics, game theory, and computational methods in economics.
This published structure illustrates the programme's expected quantitative orientation. Prospective students should compare the current course template and department offerings of each IIT before ranking preferences, since an M.Sc. Economics at one IIT need not have the same elective menu or credit structure as another.
- Core areas commonly represented in IIT Kanpur's published structure: microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics, probability/statistics and econometrics.
- Examples of specialised or interdisciplinary study at IIT Kanpur include computational methods and department/open electives.
Admission through JAM and JOAPS
For the 2026–27 cycle, candidates first took JAM, then candidates appearing in the JAM merit list applied through the Joint Admission Test for Masters Online Application Processing System (JOAPS), selected eligible programmes in preference order, and participated in centralized seat-allocation rounds. The JAM brochure states that admission consideration requires the relevant JAM qualification, the programme's MEQ and the institute's eligibility requirements.
The 2026–27 timetable is historical context rather than a future deadline: JAM 2026 was held on February 15, 2026, and the official site states that the final additional allocation round occurred on July 6–7, 2026, after which that admission process closed. A future applicant must use the next cycle's official JAM site and brochure, because dates, fees, seats and rules can change.
An offer is provisional until the admitting IIT completes document, eligibility and payment verification. In the 2026 cycle, the admission application fee was ₹750, while the seat-booking fee was ₹15,000 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates and ₹7,500 for SC/ST/PwD candidates; the booking fee was to be adjusted against institute admission fees. These are cycle-specific administrative amounts, not the total cost of the degree.
- Take the JAM paper(s) accepted by the intended programme.
- After appearing on the merit list, apply in JOAPS and rank only programmes for which the MEQ is met.
- Act within the offer letter's deadline; the available actions are accept-and-freeze, accept-and-upgrade, or reject-and-quit.
Costs: compare institute-level fee schedules, not a single national price
There is no single JAM-wide tuition price for this degree: JAM seat-booking and application payments are separate from the admitting IIT's tuition, hostel, mess and other institute charges. Costs should therefore be checked against the fee notice and admission offer of the allotted IIT.
As dated context, IIT Delhi's 2026–27 prospectus lists M.Sc./M.A. tuition for entry-year 2026 students at ₹7,500 per semester. That figure is tuition only; it should not be treated as the full two-year cost, and exemptions or additional institute, accommodation and living charges may apply. IIT Roorkee separately publishes an M.Sc. fee structure for 2026–27, illustrating that fees are institute-specific.
- Separate JAM application/seat-booking payments from institute tuition and joining charges.
- Confirm tuition waivers, hostel availability, mess advances and refund rules directly with the allotted IIT before accepting an offer.
Next options after the degree
A research-oriented next step is a Ph.D. in Economics or Economic Sciences. For example, IIT Kanpur's doctoral programme covers advanced microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative methods and econometrics, followed by supervised research; it is designed principally for teaching and research careers and can also support roles in government, research organisations and private businesses.
The precise progression route is not automatic: doctoral admission has its own eligibility, selection and funding rules. Graduates should evaluate Ph.D. admissions independently and use the research methods, econometrics and quantitative training developed during the master's programme to prepare for research-oriented applications.
- Ph.D. study in economics/economic sciences or related quantitative social-science fields.
- Research, policy-analysis and quantitative roles in government, research organisations or private businesses, subject to each employer's requirements.
- Further specialised study where an applicant's research or career goals require it.
