The JAM Geology paper can also lead to longer research-oriented formats rather than only a standalone M.Sc. The JAM 2026 matrix includes Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D. programmes in Geology and Geophysics at IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Kharagpur confirms that its Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D. entries in Geology and Geophysics use JAM for admission.

Curriculum is specialization- and institute-dependent. IIT Bombay says its two-year Applied Geology and Applied Geophysics M.Sc. programmes build theoretical and practical foundations for industry work and research. Its Applied Geology description names economic geology; geological and geochemical exploration; geochemistry; engineering, environmental and petroleum geology; mineralogy; mining geology; petrology; palaeontology; remote sensing; sedimentology; and structural geology, with practical field-based and laboratory training.

At IIT Bombay, the broader M.Sc. structure combines core and elective courses. The first two semesters generally address fundamental and applied aspects, while later semesters place more weight on electives and advanced study; a research project is often included. Applicants should obtain the current departmental course catalogue before treating a topic as compulsory.

For the 2026 cycle, JAM was a computer-based test, and Geology (GG) was one of the available test papers. JAM states that admission uses the candidate's All India Rank in the relevant paper, Government of India reservation policies, and seat availability. A qualifying JAM result does not override each admitting institute's programme-specific minimum educational qualification.

JAM distinguishes between Admitting Institutes, whose process is coordinated through the JAM organizing institute, and Result Sharing Institutes, which candidates approach directly after qualifying. The current admission-year brochure should be used to identify the exact programme code, seats, eligibility requirements, application process, and deadlines.

Fees vary materially by institute, category, residence/hostel choice, and academic year. As a dated illustration, IIT Bombay's fee schedule dated June 12, 2026 lists Autumn Semester 2026-27 academic fees for new Indian-national entrants to its two-year M.Sc. and M.Sc.-Ph.D. programmes as ₹42,400 for GEN/EWS/OBC-NCL students and ₹34,150 for SC/ST/PwD students. These totals include one-time admission charges and refundable security deposits, while hostel charges are handled separately.

The same IIT Bombay notice says SC/ST/PwD students are exempt from tuition fees and reserves IIT Bombay's right to revise the fee structure in subsequent semesters. Therefore, applicants should budget using the fee notice published by the specific admitting institute for their entry year, not a generic M.Sc. estimate.

A research pathway is available at some institutions. IIT Bombay states that students in its M.Sc. programme may convert to a Ph.D. programme when they meet Senate-approved eligibility criteria in force at the time. Separately, JAM Geology also offers direct entry routes into Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D. programmes at participating institutes, including Geology and Geophysics at IIT Kharagpur.

Whether to choose a two-year M.Sc. followed by a separate Ph.D. application or a Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D. route depends on the institute, specialization, academic performance, and the current rules. Confirm the applicable regulations with the target department and admission office.
