Quick facts
- Award and level
- M.Sc. Forestry is a postgraduate forestry degree; the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) curriculum report specifies the award title as “M.Sc Forestry,” with institutions also offering closely named variants such as M.Sc. Forestry & Environmental Sciences.
- Usual duration
- The standard model is two academic years / four semesters. This is stated in ICFRE’s model curriculum and is reflected in current programme listings at Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya and NERIST.
- Entry qualification
- B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry is the most directly aligned feeder degree. However, eligibility is institution-specific: ICFRE’s model recommended a four-year B.Sc. Forestry with stated minimum marks, while FRI and Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya also publish routes for graduates with specified science, agriculture, biology, mathematics or environmental-science backgrounds.
Eligibility: Forestry graduates are the canonical entrants, but accepted backgrounds vary
For the canonical pathway, a B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry provides the directly relevant foundation. ICFRE’s model M.Sc. Forestry framework recommended eligibility of a four-year B.Sc. Forestry with 50% aggregate marks for the general category and 45% for SC/ST candidates; this is a curriculum recommendation rather than a universal, current admission rule.
Actual university rules can be broader. FRI’s published 2022–24 bulletin accepted a B.Sc. with at least one of Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics or Zoology, or a B.Sc. in Agriculture or Forestry. Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya lists B.Sc. Forestry, B.Sc. (Hons.), or a 10+2+3 B.Sc. with Forestry, Biology, Mathematics, Agriculture or Environmental Sciences among the accepted subject backgrounds, with a 50% aggregate threshold. Applicants should treat the target institution’s current prospectus as controlling, including category relaxations, subject prerequisites and document requirements.
Because programme titles and prerequisites differ across institutions, graduates from non-forestry science or agriculture degrees should verify subject-level eligibility before applying rather than assuming that every M.Sc. Forestry programme accepts all science graduates.
- Canonical preparation: B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry / four-year B.Sc. Forestry.
- Possible alternative feeder disciplines at particular institutions: agriculture and specified basic-science, biology, mathematics or environmental-science backgrounds.
- Published minimum-mark rules and reservation provisions are institution- and admission-cycle-specific.
Duration and programme structure
M.Sc. Forestry is ordinarily structured as a two-year, four-semester postgraduate programme. ICFRE’s model framework specifies four semesters across two academic years, and official programme pages at Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya and NERIST likewise state a two-year duration.
In ICFRE’s model, the first year concentrates on core and supporting coursework; the early second year covers specialization coursework, followed by a dissertation and an attachment with an industry, organisation or institute. Universities may adapt this framework under their academic regulations, so the exact credit total, fieldwork and thesis/attachment requirements must be checked in the adopted syllabus.
- Typical duration: 2 academic years.
- Typical structure: 4 semesters.
- Common culminating components in the ICFRE model: dissertation and institutional/industry attachment.
What students study
The degree develops advanced capability in planning, managing, conserving and researching forest resources. ICFRE’s model core includes Advanced Silviculture, Forest Biometric, Advanced Forest Management, Remote Sensing & GIS, Forest Resource Management and Economics, Wood-based Industries, Chemistry of Forest Products, Forest Policy and Utilization, Advanced Forest Ecology, Forest Biodiversity Conservation, and Forest Protection.
Research and analytical preparation is built into the model through computer applications/information technology, research methodology and statistical methods, plus a seminar. The prescribed framework also includes a dissertation and attachment, making research design, data analysis, technical communication and applied exposure integral rather than optional add-ons in that model.
Specialisation availability depends on the university. ICFRE’s framework identifies options including wood science and technology, medicinal and aromatic plants, plantation technology, watershed management, eco-tourism, agroforestry, bio-energy, forest biotechnology, environmental management and forest business management. NERIST describes complementary faculty expertise spanning forest ecology, wood science, taxonomy, ethnobotany, silviculture, biodiversity conservation, wildlife management, genetics, forest economics and environmental restoration.
- Core themes: silviculture, forest management, ecology, biodiversity, protection, policy, economics and forest products.
- Methods and tools: biometrics, statistics, research methodology, remote sensing and GIS.
- Applied/research elements: seminar, dissertation/project work, and—under the ICFRE model—an institutional or industry attachment.
- Specialisation options differ by campus and may reflect regional forestry needs.
Admission: verify the current institution-level notice
There is no single current all-India admission route evidenced by the sources for every M.Sc. Forestry provider. Admission is set by the admitting university. ICFRE’s model report proposed a national entrance test for a portion of seats and allowed universities to determine the mode for other seats; this should be read as a policy-model recommendation, not as a standing nationwide rule.
As an example of institution-specific practice, FRI’s 2022–24 M.Sc. Forestry bulletin used an online remote-proctored admission test and required applicants to meet its published B.Sc.-level eligibility and qualifying-mark conditions. That bulletin is historical: its application deadline and test date must not be reused for a later cycle.
A sound application process is to identify the exact degree title and specialisation, read the university’s current admission notice, confirm eligibility against the marksheet, and follow its stated examination, merit, counselling, reservation and document-verification procedures.
- Do not rely on an old entrance-test date, fee or seat count.
- Check the current prospectus/admission portal of each target university.
- Confirm whether selection is through an entrance test, academic merit, counselling, or a combination specified by that institution.
Next options after the degree
A principal academic progression is doctoral research in forestry or a closely related environmental/forest-science field. NERIST states that its forestry department offers degree, postgraduate and Ph.D. programmes and that its faculty guide doctoral students; Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya also lists a Ph.D. alongside its M.Sc. Forestry & Environmental Sciences programme.
The M.Sc. curriculum’s dissertation, research-methodology and specialisation components can provide preparation for research-focused doctoral applications. The appropriate Ph.D. discipline and admission route will depend on the target university’s research areas and current doctoral regulations.
- Ph.D. in Forestry or Forestry & Environmental Sciences.
- Research-oriented pathways aligned with the student’s M.Sc. specialisation, such as forest ecology, biodiversity, silviculture, forest products, geospatial analysis, agroforestry or environmental management.
- Applicants should review the target university’s current doctoral entrance and supervisor-availability requirements.
