The national baseline in NCTE’s Appendix 5 is at least 50% marks, or an equivalent grade, in B.Ed.; integrated B.A.B.Ed. or B.Sc.B.Ed.; B.El.Ed.; or D.El.Ed. together with an undergraduate degree, with 50% in each of the latter qualifications. The applicable Central or State rules govern category-based reservation and relaxation.

Individual universities can publish programme-specific conditions and document requirements. For example, the University of Delhi’s 2025-26 prospectus used the same qualifying routes and 50% threshold, while specifying that category concessions followed university rules. Applicants should therefore check the current prospectus of every target institution rather than relying only on the national minimum.

• Primary route: B.Ed. with at least 50% marks or equivalent grade.
• Other recognised routes: B.A.B.Ed./B.Sc.B.Ed., B.El.Ed., or D.El.Ed. plus a bachelor’s degree, subject to the stated marks conditions.
• Reservation, relaxation, equivalence and documentation requirements vary by the applicable government and university rules.

The NCTE standard is two academic years, including a minimum four-week field attachment and a research dissertation. Students are allowed up to three years from admission to complete the programme under the cited norm.

The programme is structured as intensive professional study: NCTE specifies at least 200 working days per year and minimum attendance of 80% for theory and practicum and 90% for field attachment. A current institution’s academic calendar, semester system and daily schedule should be confirmed locally.

At the regulatory level, M.Ed. combines advanced study in education with practicum, field attachment and a research dissertation. The qualification is designed for preparation in teacher education and wider education-professional work, rather than being solely a classroom-teaching credential.

Course titles and specialisations are set by universities. As an illustrative official university structure, the University of Delhi’s 2025-26 M.Ed. prospectus described research-methods courses and seminar work, perspective courses spanning philosophical, sociological, psychological, historical and economic foundations of education and teacher education, optional specialisation courses, project work and a dissertation. It also described teaching through lectures, discussions, practicum, presentations, group work, school-based assignments and seminars.

NCTE permits admission on the basis of qualifying-examination marks, an entrance examination, or another selection process, according to the policy of the relevant State Government, Central Government, university or Union Territory administration. Consequently, M.Ed. admissions are not governed by one universal application route.

CUET-PG is an important route at participating institutions, but it is not universally required. The University of Delhi’s 2025-26 M.Ed. prospectus, for example, selected candidates through CUET-PG merit, while the Central University of Gujarat listed M.Ed. under CUET-PG with test-paper code COQP15 for its 2025-26 intake. Entrance codes, participating institutions, counselling steps and dates can change by admission cycle; applicants should consult the current NTA and university notices.

• Confirm the institution’s current eligibility and selection method before applying.
• If a target institution uses CUET-PG, register for the required paper code and complete that institution’s separate admission or counselling process where required.
• Keep qualifying-degree records, marksheets, category certificates where applicable, identity documents and entrance-test records ready for verification.

There is no single national M.Ed. tuition figure. Under the NCTE norm, an institution may charge only the fee prescribed by its affiliating body or State Government under the applicable fee-regulation framework, and it must not charge donations or capitation fees.

Actual student cost is therefore institution- and location-specific. It can include tuition and university charges, examination and registration charges, accommodation, travel, learning materials and fieldwork expenses. As a dated example of how variable disclosure can be, the University of Delhi’s 2025-26 M.Ed. prospectus stated that fee structures for its offering institutions would be announced at admission time and that concessions would follow university guidelines. Verify the published fee notice for the specific academic session before accepting an offer.

• Do not treat fee figures from past admission cycles as current.
• Request or download the official fee schedule for the relevant institution and session.
• Avoid any institution or intermediary seeking capitation fees or donations.

The programme’s stated purpose supports work and further development in teacher education, curriculum development, education policy analysis, planning, administration, supervision, school leadership and educational research. Specific appointments depend on the recruiting organisation’s own eligibility rules and experience requirements.

A research progression may include applying for a Ph.D. after the master’s degree, subject to the university’s admissions process and the UGC Ph.D. Regulations. For higher-education teaching, an M.Ed. alone is not a universal appointment guarantee: UGC regulations set broader requirements for Assistant Professor appointments, including a relevant master’s degree with at least 55% marks and ordinarily NET/SLET/SET, subject to the stated Ph.D. and discipline-related provisions.
