Quick facts

What this node represents
In India, “Executive MBA” is not a single nationally standardised programme title. This node covers the intensive, full-time, one-year MBA format for experienced professionals, exemplified by IIM Ahmedabad’s MBA-PGPX and IIM Bangalore’s EPGP.
Typical duration and format
A leading example, IIM Bangalore EPGP, is a one-year, full-time residential MBA; IIM Ahmedabad likewise describes MBA-PGPX as a one-year full-time MBA.
Experience threshold
Experience requirements are programme-specific: IIM Ahmedabad MBA-PGPX requires at least four years of full-time post-graduation experience, while IIM Bangalore EPGP requires at least five years.
Common entrance tests
GMAT or GRE is required by the cited IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore one-year MBA admissions processes; applicants should check the current programme rules because accepted tests and score conditions can change by intake.
Fees: dated example
For context only, IIM Calcutta listed a programme fee of ₹33.50 lakh for its MBAEx 2025–26 batch, with some personal expenses excluded. Fees, inclusions, instalments, and financing terms vary by school and intake.

Who an Executive MBA is for

The one-year Executive MBA route is generally aimed at professionals who already have meaningful full-time experience and now want broad general-management preparation, rather than an entry-level management qualification. At IIM Ahmedabad, MBA-PGPX applicants need a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, a minimum age of 25 by the stated cut-off, at least four years of full-time experience after graduation, and a valid GMAT or GRE score. IIM Bangalore’s EPGP requires a bachelor’s degree with stipulated marks, at least five years of post-degree experience, and a valid GMAT or GRE score.

These examples illustrate the format rather than a universal India-wide rule: exact work-experience calculations, age cut-offs, academic thresholds, category provisions, and test-score policies belong to each school’s current admissions notice.

  • Suitable profile: an employed professional or entrepreneur seeking a management/leadership transition after building work experience.
  • Academic background: programmes can accept bachelor’s degrees across disciplines; professional qualifications may be treated separately under each school’s rules.
  • Work experience: count only the type and period the school explicitly recognises—do not assume internships, part-time work, or pre-graduation work will qualify.

Duration and study commitment

The canonical format is an intensive one-year, full-time residential programme. IIM Bangalore calls EPGP a one-year full-time residential MBA, and IIM Ahmedabad positions MBA-PGPX as a one-year MBA for experienced professionals. This is materially different from part-time, weekend, online, blended, or longer executive-management programmes that may also be marketed using “executive MBA” language.

Because the learning is compressed into roughly a year, applicants should plan for the opportunity cost of stepping away from full-time employment, as well as relocation and living arrangements where relevant.

  • Verify whether a programme is full-time residential or work-compatible before applying.
  • Check the academic calendar, attendance expectations, immersion travel, and whether internships are part of the format.
  • Do not infer that every programme labelled “Executive MBA” grants the same credential or follows the same duration.

What students study

Curricula combine management fundamentals with leadership and strategic decision-making. IIM Ahmedabad’s published MBA-PGPX structure begins with core “Building Blocks” courses and then moves into top-management preparation, electives, an international immersion, and a capstone. Its listed core subjects include customer value, data analysis, operations, finance and accounting, economics, organisational behaviour, corporate finance, communication, strategy, human resources, and legal aspects of business.

Electives allow participants to tailor study toward functions or sectors such as marketing, finance, supply chain, and strategy. At IIM Ahmedabad, participants may also pursue an individual research project, such as a business plan, industry note, case analysis, or paper addressing a socio-economic divide. Course lists and international components are school- and intake-specific.

  • Core management foundation: finance, economics, strategy, operations, marketing, organisational behaviour, and communication.
  • Experienced-professional focus: leadership, corporate governance, change, complex decision-making, and capstone integration.
  • Customisation: electives and, at some schools, research projects or international immersion.

How admission usually works

Admission is selective and holistic, not simply a test-score cut-off. IIM Bangalore requires applicants to submit academic records, a GMAT/GRE scorecard, statement of purpose, work-experience evidence, and two references; shortlisted applicants proceed to an interview. Its final composite assessment includes academic record, GMAT/GRE, quality of work experience, a writing-ability test, and interview performance.

At IIM Ahmedabad, the published MBA-PGPX requirements similarly combine eligibility screening with a valid GMAT/GRE and an admissions process involving shortlisting, essays, and faculty interviews. Current deadlines are intake-specific: for example, IIM Ahmedabad’s 2027–28 page lists application rounds in 2026, but expressly notes that dates may change. Applicants should rely on the relevant school’s live admissions page rather than old brochures or third-party deadline lists.

  • Prepare: degree transcripts/certificates, test score report, detailed résumé, employment proof, essays or statement of purpose, and references where required.
  • Take the required test in the accepted mode; the cited IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore policies exclude at-home GMAT/GRE scores for their stated cycles.
  • Apply early enough to accommodate test reporting, document verification, interview scheduling, loan processing, notice periods, and relocation.

Costs and financial planning

Cost should be assessed as total cost of attendance, not tuition alone. As a dated reference point, IIM Calcutta’s MBAEx fee page for the 2025–26 batch lists ₹33.50 lakh, payable in instalments, and states that tuition, course material, books, accommodation, economy airfare, and some immersion expenses were included; electricity, food, and personal expenses were excluded. This is an example from one school and one intake, not a market-wide price benchmark.

In IIM Ahmedabad’s MBA-PGPX guidance, the packaged fee is described as covering tuition, books/course materials, accommodation, and services such as library and computing, while international-immersion costs and certain utilities may be additional. Before accepting an offer, obtain the current fee schedule and identify refundable deposits, travel, visas, insurance, food, foregone salary, and financing costs.

  • Ask for the current batch’s official fee schedule and payment dates.
  • Confirm what is included: housing, meals, course materials, immersion travel, insurance, utilities, and deposits.
  • Treat scholarships and bank-loan availability as programme-specific; terms and eligibility can change.

Career and further-study options

Graduates commonly use the degree to pursue larger management responsibilities, change function or industry, return to an employer in a more strategic role, or explore entrepreneurship. IIM Ahmedabad describes MBA-PGPX as general-management preparation that can be shaped through electives around post-programme employment aims, and says its alumni move into senior leadership and entrepreneurial paths.

Career support should not be mistaken for a guaranteed outcome. IIM Ahmedabad states that its placement office supports the student placement committee but that placements are neither guaranteed nor an entitlement. The same programme says successful graduates are eligible to apply for higher studies, including PhD programmes; admission to any doctoral programme remains subject to that institution’s selection rules.

  • Career progression: leadership, strategy, product, consulting, transformation, and general-management roles, depending on prior experience and recruiting conditions.
  • Career change: use electives, projects, peer network, and career services to build evidence for a function or sector pivot.
  • Further study: an MBA may support applications to doctoral study, but it does not guarantee admission.
