Applicants normally need a recognised senior-secondary qualification and must meet the course-specific academic prerequisites. Engineering programmes commonly expect strong mathematics and science preparation, but the required subjects and grades are set by each university and discipline.

For illustration rather than as a universal threshold, UCL’s India guidance considers CBSE/CISCE Year 12 results for undergraduate entry and maps A-level requirements to subject marks. Its 2026 Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng specifies Mathematics and prefers Physics or Further Mathematics in its standard entry profile. Imperial’s Electrical Engineering guidance lists, for ISC/CBSE applicants, 95% in Mathematics, 95% in Physics and 95% overall, with a JEE common-merit-list rank that may be waived. These examples show why applicants should verify the exact country qualification page and the individual engineering course page before applying.

English proficiency is a separate condition at many institutions. For example, UCL’s Level 2 English requirement is IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in every component, although UCL also recognises specified Indian Class XII English results. A student should not assume that taking IELTS automatically satisfies every university’s policy, nor that it is necessary where an accepted school qualification or exemption applies.

  • Complete Class XII or another accepted school-leaving qualification, with the mathematics/science subjects required by the selected branch.
  • Check the university’s India-specific qualification equivalencies and the engineering programme’s subject requirements separately.

Duration and award structure

The label “Bachelor of Science in Engineering” does not impose a single international structure. At MIT, all undergraduate courses lead to the Bachelor of Science (SB), and most undergraduate degrees require four years of full-time study; MIT’s Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Aerospace Engineering is explicitly described as a four-year programme. In the UK, a comparable undergraduate engineering route may be titled BEng and can be three academic years, as in UCL’s 2026 Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng.

Applicants should compare the named award, total period of study, internship/co-op or placement options, and whether the programme is a bachelor’s degree or an integrated master’s pathway. These distinctions can matter for future admissions, professional recognition and Indian equivalence assessment.

What the engineering curriculum usually includes

Curricula differ by branch—such as mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, computer or aerospace engineering—but an accredited engineering bachelor’s curriculum commonly combines mathematics, basic sciences, engineering science, discipline-specific engineering, computing/tools, design and broader education. ABET’s 2025–26 baccalaureate engineering criteria require at least 30 semester credit hours (or equivalent) of college-level mathematics and basic sciences with experimental experience, at least 45 semester credit hours of engineering topics including engineering design and modern tools, a broad-education component, and a culminating major design experience.

This is a useful quality benchmark, not a guarantee that every overseas programme is ABET-accredited or follows the same credits. Applicants should check the accreditor and the accreditation status of the specific programme—not merely the university—where professional recognition matters.

Admission: school record, SAT and IELTS

Admission is normally a holistic, institution-defined process rather than a single exam pathway. Academic transcripts, required subjects, predicted or final school results, essays or statements, references, activities, interviews and programme-specific tests may all be relevant depending on the university. Imperial states that meeting academic requirements is only one factor and identifies course requirements, possible admissions tests and English-language requirements as parts of undergraduate entry.

SAT scores can be relevant for overseas undergraduate applications, particularly in the United States, but the policy must be checked for the intended entry cycle. College Board states that SAT scores are considered by postsecondary institutions outside the United States as well as by nearly all four-year US colleges; however, current university policies differ. MIT’s 2025–26 Common Data Set reports SAT or ACT as required for first-year admission for Fall 2027, whereas many institutions are test-optional or have different programme-level requirements.

For applicants using IELTS, submit only a test type, score and validity period accepted by the target university. For example, UCL identifies IELTS Academic as its preferred English qualification and publishes programme language levels; its Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng is designated Level 2. Deadlines, tests and score rules can change by cycle, so use the official course and admissions pages for the chosen year.

  • Build a university-by-university requirements list; do not infer one country’s policy from another’s.
  • Send SAT scores only where required or strategically useful under the current policy; confirm score-reporting deadlines.
  • Check whether the course uses additional assessments, interviews, portfolios or admissions tests.

Costs and financial planning

Fees vary materially by destination, university, programme and academic year, and tuition is only one part of the budget. As a dated example, UCL lists overseas tuition of £42,700 for its Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng for 2026/27; this figure should not be treated as a price for all foreign engineering degrees or future cohorts.

Build a written cost plan covering tuition, accommodation, food, health insurance where applicable, travel, books/equipment, local transport, visa-related charges and contingency funds. For US F-1 study, the Department of Homeland Security states that students must demonstrate financial ability to pay tuition and living expenses before coming to the United States; it also warns that student work opportunities are limited and subject to authorisation. Therefore, do not make an affordability plan dependent on unrestricted part-time work.

  • Use the official fee page for the exact course and entry year; verify whether fees are annual or total-programme amounts.
  • Separate tuition from living and migration/visa costs.
  • Check scholarships, financial aid and payment schedules directly with each university.
  • For US study, plan for the financial-evidence requirement and observe restrictions on student employment.

Options after graduation

A foreign engineering bachelor’s degree can be used to seek engineering and related entry-level roles or to pursue postgraduate study, subject to the destination employer’s, regulator’s or university’s requirements. For example, MIT describes its four-year Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Aerospace Engineering as preparing graduates for entry-level aerospace and related positions and for further education at master’s level.

Students intending to return to India should preserve the final degree, transcripts, mode-of-study evidence and institutional/accreditation documentation. AIU states that it issues foreign-qualification equivalence certificates for higher studies and employment purposes and evaluates conditions including the foreign university’s recognition, regular full-time campus study, duration and minimum entry requirements. An overseas degree does not automatically establish eligibility for every regulated professional role; confirm requirements with the relevant Indian employer, university or professional regulator before committing to a programme.

  • Apply for graduate engineering, technology, management or research programmes where the university accepts the bachelor’s degree.
  • Pursue relevant entry-level engineering, technology, analytics, consulting or product roles, subject to local work authorisation and employer requirements.
