Quick facts

Credential issuer and status
The Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) designation is available only to a CFA Institute Charterholder Member in good standing; passing exams alone does not authorize use of the designation.
Core completion requirements
Applicants for Charterholder membership must complete all three CFA Program levels, document at least 4,000 hours of eligible work experience accrued over a minimum of 36 months, and supply professional references.
Eligible experience
Qualifying experience must be directly involved in investment decision-making or produce work that informs or adds value to that process; it may be earned before, during, or after CFA Program participation.
Study and programme length
CFA Institute indicates about 300 study hours per exam level and estimates that completing the three exam levels generally takes three to four years. The 36-month work-experience minimum may overlap with study where the work qualifies.
2026 fee context
For 2026 exams, CFA Institute states that total exam-registration fees across all three levels range from USD 3,520 to USD 4,600 depending on early versus standard registration. The quoted amount excludes local taxes; membership dues and any local-society charges are separate and can vary.
Ongoing good standing
To remain in good standing and continue using the CFA marks, a Charterholder Member must annually complete the Professional Conduct Statement and pay applicable membership dues.

What is required to become a CFA Charterholder?

For an India-based candidate, the route is the same global CFA Institute route: complete CFA Program Levels I, II, and III; accumulate 4,000 hours of eligible investment-related experience over at least 36 months; and be admitted as a CFA Institute Charterholder Member. Eligible work need not be completed after the exams—experience earned before, during, or after CFA Program participation can count if the duties are sufficiently related to investment decision-making or a work product that supports it.

The membership application also requires professional references. CFA Institute specifies two references when one is an active Professional or Charterholder member of the local society to which the applicant applies; otherwise, three references are required. Applicants apply to a local CFA society as part of the membership process, although society membership itself is voluntary after approval for Professional and Charterholder members.

CFA Program entry requirements are distinct from the later charter requirements. To register for Level I, a candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree, be within 23 months of their undergraduate graduation month, or meet CFA Institute’s combined higher-education/professional-work-experience route. A valid international travel passport is required to register for and sit the exam.

  • Work counted toward the charter must be investment-decision related; general professional work that is sufficient for Level I entry does not automatically satisfy the later charter work-experience test.
  • CFA Institute can ask for evidence of stated education or work experience, so candidates should retain clear employment records and role descriptions.
  • Candidates and members are subject to the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.

How long does the path take?

CFA Institute estimates roughly 300 hours of study for each exam level and says the three-level programme commonly takes three to four years. That estimate is not a guaranteed completion timeline: exam availability, unsuccessful attempts, registration timing, and an individual’s study pace can extend it.

The charter’s experience threshold is 4,000 hours completed over a minimum of 36 months. Because qualifying experience can be accumulated before, while, or after pursuing the CFA Program, a candidate who is already in a qualifying investment role may meet the experience and exam requirements on overlapping timelines. The final timeline also includes membership application review after references are received.

  • Three exams are required: Level I, Level II, and Level III.
  • At least one Practical Skills Module must be completed at each level in order to receive that level’s exam result.
  • Each exam level has a maximum of six attempts; retakes cannot be in consecutive windows or within six months of a prior attempt.

What the CFA Program covers before charterholder status

The CFA Program is a progressive three-exam curriculum. Level I emphasizes knowledge of investment concepts and tools; Level II emphasizes analysis and evaluation through vignettes; and Level III emphasizes integrating and applying knowledge through item sets and constructed responses.

Across Levels I and II, the curriculum covers ethical and professional standards, quantitative methods, economics, financial statement analysis, corporate issuers, equity investments, fixed income, derivatives, alternative investments, and portfolio management/wealth planning. Level III focuses on ethical standards, asset allocation, portfolio construction, performance measurement, derivatives and risk management, and a candidate-selected pathway in Portfolio Management, Private Markets, or Private Wealth.

Practical Skills Modules complement the core curriculum with applied learning. CFA Institute states that a module takes approximately 10–20 hours, and completion of at least one module at every level is required before that level’s result is issued.

  • Ethics is examined at every level.
  • The Level III pathway is a substantial component of the Level III assessment, with CFA Institute publishing a 30–35% topic weight range.
  • Published topic weights and curriculum content can change by exam year; candidates should use the curriculum and candidate resources attached to their own registered exam window.

Membership application and use of the CFA designation

After meeting the exam and qualifying-experience requirements, the candidate applies for CFA Institute Charterholder membership and selects a local CFA society for application review. CFA Institute says its review can take up to 10 business days after all materials are received, while the selected society’s review may take up to 30 calendar days; these are stated processing estimates rather than a guaranteed deadline.

Only a Charterholder Member in good standing may use the CFA® designation. Maintaining good standing requires annual completion of the Professional Conduct Statement and payment of applicable dues. The CFA marks must also be used consistently with CFA Institute’s rules and its Code and Standards.

  • Prepare role descriptions that explain how each position contributed directly to investment decisions or to work products supporting those decisions.
  • Arrange references before applying; the reference count depends on whether one reference is an active member of the relevant local society.
  • A local-society application is part of the process, but joining that society after approval is voluntary for Charterholder and Professional members.

Costs for an Indian candidate: dated and variable context

For the 2026 CFA exam cycle, CFA Institute publishes total registration fees of USD 3,520–4,600 for all three levels, depending on whether each registration is made in an early or standard window. CFA Institute states that fees are paid in US dollars and that local taxes are excluded from the published total, so the final amount charged to an Indian candidate can differ because of taxes, exchange rates, card or payment-provider charges, and the chosen registration timing.

CFA Institute lists Charterholder membership at USD 299 per year on its global membership page, while also noting that pricing varies by country and that reduced rates may apply in eligible markets. A candidate should therefore treat both examination pricing and annual membership pricing as time-sensitive and confirm the final charge in the application or registration portal. Optional preparation providers, travel, rescheduling, and local-society participation can add costs beyond the published three-exam total.

CFA Institute also offers scholarships, including Access, Student, and Professor scholarships. Eligibility, application windows, award values, and available exam windows are programme-specific and can change, so an applicant should verify the current scholarship terms before relying on them.

  • Published 2026 three-exam total: USD 3,520–4,600, excluding local taxes.
  • CFA Institute states a USD 250 exam rescheduling fee where a reschedule is permitted.
  • Do not budget from an old fee schedule: CFA Institute removed the one-time enrollment fee for exams from the February 2026 window onward and changed per-level pricing.

Career direction after earning the charter

The CFA charter is aligned with investment-analysis and investment-management work rather than being an academic degree or a substitute for any role-specific legal, regulatory, or employer requirements in India. CFA Institute presents common related career paths as investment analyst, portfolio manager, strategist, consultant, wealth manager, and financial analyst roles. Actual hiring requirements, compensation, and whether the charter is preferred or required remain employer-, role-, and market-specific.

Charterholder membership provides ongoing professional resources and participation options, including use of the CFA designation, voting rights, career resources, learning materials, a member directory, and the opportunity to engage with CFA societies. These benefits can support continuing development and networking after the credential is awarded.

  • Potential directions include equity or credit research, portfolio and risk management, investment consulting, wealth management, and investment-strategy roles.
  • Candidates should separately check Indian employer requirements and applicable regulation for any role involving regulated securities, investment-advisory, research-analyst, portfolio-management, or distribution activities.
  • Maintaining annual membership good standing is necessary to continue representing oneself as an active CFA charterholder.
